Trainee Rules of Conduct

While you are at BMT, certain activities are off-limits. The list below collects the trainee prohibitions and groups them by theme so they're easier to remember. Read it once carefully — most of it is common sense, but a few rules trip people up the first time.

The blanket principle: if you have to ask whether something is allowed, it probably isn't. Ask your MTI before doing it.

Substances and contraband

You may not purchase, possess, consume, or use:

• Alcoholic beverages (any kind, any amount)
• Tobacco products (any kind)
• Over-the-counter medications and supplements — except cough drops and items prescribed or cleared by a military medical doctor
• Aerosol products (strictly prohibited; do not even purchase them)
• Obscene or pornographic material

You also cannot bring food items into the dormitory. The only exception is authorized nutrition bars. No outside snacks, no care-package food, no leftovers from the DFAC.

Testing integrity

You may not solicit, disclose, receive, or obtain any information about 737 TRG tests or answer sheets — before, during, or after the test. This is non-negotiable. Sharing test content is a violation of Air Force regulations and a crime under Article 92 of the UCMJ.

Movement, location, and travel

• Do not operate any motor vehicle while at BMT.
• Do not travel without a wingman — anywhere.
• Do not enter any "OFF-LIMITS" area, on or off base. This includes the mechanical areas of Recruit Housing & Training (RH&T) and the Airman Training Complex (ATC).
• Do not enter the opposite-sex dormitory at any time without an MTI present. If the MTI leaves, opposite-sex trainees return to their own dormitory immediately.
• Do not enter an empty area (empty dorm bay, the PT or supply room after duty hours, the linen closet, any other empty room or building) unless accompanied by a wingman of the same sex and the visit has a clear training objective.
• Do not hitchhike or wait alongside any street to flag down a ride in a private vehicle.
• Use only your own squadron's patio area unless the flight MTI and squadron leadership approve otherwise.
• You may not go off base except for authorized Town Pass and official duties.

Speech and conduct

• Do not use profanity or obscene language.
• Do not engage in language that threatens violence, degrades, belittles, or demeans another trainee. No slurs based on color, national origin, race, religion, age, ethnic group, sex, sexual orientation, or physical stature.
• Public displays of affection (PDA) are not allowed — kissing, holding hands, hugging, walking arm-in-arm. Brief affection at homecomings, deployments, and graduations is acceptable in moderation.
• Do not collect or solicit money from other trainees.
• Do not participate in games of chance (with or without a gambling device).

Touching, modesty, and interactions

• Trainees only touch another member when it's necessary to accomplish a training task. Professional conversations and appropriate greetings between trainees of any sex are authorized — restrictions apply to physical contact, not communication.
• Modesty rule: wear at least a towel around yourself when traveling to or from the shower or latrine.

Sexual misconduct

• Do not make sexual advances toward, or seek or accept advances or favors from, anyone — including 737 TRG personnel and other trainees.
• Do not use threats, pressure, or promises of return favors to attempt to gain favors from anyone.

If you experience or witness sexual misconduct, report it. The Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC) is available — and you can request a confidential, anonymous referral through a chaplain.

Relationships with permanent party

Do not establish, develop, or attempt to develop a social, personal, intimate, or sexual relationship with your MTI or any other AETC staff member. This includes face-to-face contact, cards, letters, emails, phone calls, instant messages, video, social media (Facebook and similar), or any other channel.

If you become a technical training student later and need to communicate with an MTI for a professional matter, that contact has to be coordinated through supervisory personnel (IS or MTL) and must be in person or by voice telephone.

Uniform and appearance

• You must remain in uniform at all times, including during Town Pass, unless otherwise directed.
• Do not wear OCP or service uniforms while doing athletic activities at the fitness center or playing golf.
• Swimming at local hotels and theme parks is prohibited.

Phones and visitors

• Phone use is prohibited before the retreat / coin ceremony unless you have express permission and direct oversight from squadron leadership. All trainees receive a separate cell-phone policy briefing and must sign a roster acknowledging the rules and consequences.
• No visitors until after the retreat / coin ceremony — including meetings at the chapel or other base facilities.

Graduation week and lodging

During graduation week's liberty / Town Pass, you may not visit base housing or military lodging facilities unless family members live there, and even then only with squadron leadership approval.
