A few minutes away from the constant pace of training helps you refocus and reset. The patio break is that pause — but it's also a test. To earn additional patio breaks, you have to demonstrate the Core Values you've been learning: Integrity First by returning to the dorm on time, self-control by not overdoing the snacks, and accountability by proving the privilege was deserved.

Overview

Objective: Demonstrate and connect with members of the Air Force team through Basic Military Training indoctrination.

  • Identify the purpose of the patio break and its benefits.
  • Understand the key information and rules around patio breaks.

  • Self-Control — Keeps emotions under control and restrains negative actions when under stress.

Purpose

Patio breaks are a chance to show self-discipline, professional behavior, and Core Values. The time can be used to read letters, talk with fellow wingmen and teammates, or simply enjoy a snack or soda away from the day-to-day stresses of training.

For your MTI, the patio break is a tool — a way to reward exceptional performance and to instill discipline by holding trainees accountable when expectations aren't met.

Key Information

  • All trainees receive a mandatory 45-minute initial patio break in the 1st Week of Training (1 WOT). This one is automatic.
  • Additional patio breaks are a privilege you must earn — not something you're entitled to. They're given at MTI discretion to all, some, or none of the flight. Your performance dictates how much patio break is given or withheld.
  • Mission requirements may also limit how many patio breaks you receive in a given week.

Patio hours

Use of the patios may be restricted during inclement weather.

Patio Break Rules

While on patio break, follow these rules:

  • Wear the uniform of the day unless otherwise instructed.
  • Wear only issued glasses unless you have a waiver.
  • Comply with the Trainee Rules of Conduct posted on the dormitory bulletin board and in Cerego.
  • Exercise self-discipline, practice Core Values, and stay professional under minimal supervision.
  • Follow customs and courtesies and maintain impeccable bearing and proper dress and appearance.
  • No horseplay, unprofessional language, or arguing.
  • No gossip. It's unprofessional and can create a hostile environment.
  • Don't damage or abuse machines or equipment. It's a violation of Article 108 of the UCMJ — Damage to Government Property.
  • Report abuse, lost money, or inoperable machines to your instructor team. If you lose money, write down the machine number and ask your MTI for permission to go to the mini-mall to be reimbursed.
  • Consume drinks and snacks on the patio only. Discard your trash before leaving.
  • Stay out of laundry rooms (Recruit Housing and Training only). Don't talk with or give food or drinks to laundry crew members.
  • No visitors are allowed on the patio at any time.

Summary

There are many opportunities to earn additional patio breaks — but the rules come with the privilege. Excellence In All We Do isn't just following the rules; it's striving to show professionalism and set the example for others.
