Base Liberty Briefing
Table of ContentsShow
Base liberty is your first taste of what an Air Force base actually offers — restaurants, the BX, a movie theater, a museum, a bowling alley. Like the patio break, it's a reward, not an entitlement. To earn it, you have to make sound decisions and stay accountable for your actions. While you're out exploring, be courteous and professional — you're representing yourself and your unit.
Overview
Objective: Demonstrate and connect with members of the Air Force team through Basic Military Training indoctrination.
Learning Outcomes
- Understand the purpose and key information about base liberty.
- Recognize permitted and prohibited locations and activities around the base.
- Identify the basic facts of the Rules of Engagement (ROE).
Foundational Competencies
- Accountability — Accepts full responsibility for self and team; displays honesty and truthfulness.
- Decision Making — Makes well-informed, effective, timely decisions; uses sound judgment to weigh constraints, risks, and rewards.

Purpose
Base liberty is your chance to demonstrate the self-discipline and professionalism expected of every Airman. It's where you put the Core Values into practice, in real time, with minimal supervision.
Beyond the discipline test, it's also a way to bolster motivation and resilience by participating in relaxing activities responsibly — and to learn what the base actually has to offer for entertainment, food, and recreation. For your MTI, base liberty is another tool to instill discipline by holding you accountable for your actions.
Authorized Times for Base Liberty
Base liberty can be approved at the squadron commander's discretion after the 4th Week of Training (4 WOT). Liberty privileges can be restricted by the squadron commander (on recommendation of the flight commander) due to poor performance or disciplinary issues.

Rules of Engagement
Follow every rule from your instructor, plus the Trainee Rules of Conduct posted on the dormitory bulletin board and in the LMS module.
- Conduct yourself professionally.
- Render customs and courtesies — salute marked staff vehicles, observe retreat courtesies.
- Wear the uniform of the day.
- Carry an operational flashlight during hours of darkness.
- March at attention — except during Red or Black Flag conditions.
- Carry your Military ID card. Don't misplace or lose it; losing your ID can delay your departure from BMT.
- Have a wingman / teammate at all times — and be a good wingman / teammate.
- Two trainees of the opposite sex never march alone, regardless of the time of day.
- All food and beverages must be consumed at the location purchased.
- No alcohol or energy drinks.
- No tobacco, vapes, tobacco-free synthetics, or any form of nicotine.
- No cell phones or social media.
- You will be held accountable for your actions.
Summary
Base liberty is one of the better rewards available during BMT. There's plenty to see — but remember which locations are permitted versus prohibited, and stay inside the Rules of Engagement. Liberty time is awarded based on flight performance, so following instructions and living the Core Values can directly increase the amount of time your flight earns.
