Town Pass

Town Pass is your first chance to leave base after BMT — visit San Antonio, see your family, and demonstrate the professionalism of a 21st-century Airman in public. Like patio break and base liberty, it's a privilege you earn through performance and lose through poor decisions. The section below covers the hours, uniform, rules, money handling, and how to ship luggage to Technical Training.

Overview

Objective: Demonstrate and connect with members of the Air Force team through Basic Military Training indoctrination.

Hours

Town Pass is an earned privilege that begins immediately following the Graduation Ceremony and ends at the time set by your unit. There is no guarantee you'll receive Town Pass during BMT.

Restrictions are imposed in accordance with 737 TRGOI 36-3, Basic Military Training (BMT). Squadron commanders may restrict graduation liberties — on recommendation from the flight commander — for poor performance or disciplinary issues.

Visitors

The Pfingston Reception Center, Bldg 6330, is the designated location for visitors to obtain information and contact Airmen.

After Town Pass, Airmen either report back to their squadron (if on base liberty) or are dropped off at the designated location (depending on squadron procedures), then march back to their respective squadron immediately.

Rules for visitors:

• Do not linger in or get out of vehicles in the parking lots.
• No loud music.
• Do not disrupt squadron operations.

If inclement weather warnings hit, take immediate shelter and wait the storm out. If you're going to be late returning, contact your CQ at (210) 671-[squadron CQ extension].

Uniforms

You may wear any authorized service uniform combination with all permitted accoutrements (ribbons, tie tack, tie clasp). Restrictions:

• Issued glasses only, unless you have a waiver.
• No civilian clothing unless otherwise directed.
• No unauthorized items — no sunglasses, no Bluetooth ear pieces, no headphones.
• Graduating Airmen are allowed to have their personal cell phones.

Rules

The list is long but the spirit is simple — act in a way that brings credit to yourself, the Air Force, and your unit. While on Town Pass, you must:

• Comply with the UCMJ, Trainee Rules of Conduct, and Core Values.
• Wear the uniform of the day.
• Carry an operational flashlight during hours of darkness.
• Carry your CAC. Don't misplace or lose it — losing your CAC can delay your departure from BMT.
• Visit only approved JBSA-Lackland facilities, food venues, and off-base attractions.
• All food and beverages must be consumed on location. Don't bring food or beverages back to the squadron area.
• Have a wingman / teammate with you at all times, unless you're accompanied by family members. Opposite-sex one-on-one situations with other Airmen are prohibited.
• Use crosswalks on and off base. Obey all traffic signals. Don't jaywalk.
• If you get lost, ask a police officer or other reliable source for directions.

Hard prohibitions:

• No alcohol.
• No tobacco, vapes, tobacco-free synthetics, or any form of nicotine.
• No prostitutes. Don't get involved.
• No tattoos, brands, or body piercings.
• No hair dye except as permitted in DAFI 36-2903 (Dress and Personal Appearance).
• No public demonstrations.
• No confrontations with the local population.
• No illegal drugs.
• Don't accept rides from strangers.
• Don't have unauthorized contact with any MTI or permanent party personnel. If unauthorized contact occurs, you have an obligation to report it.

Off-limits accommodations:

• The Inns of Lackland and base housing are off-limits unless family members are lodged or reside there. Even then, you need squadron leadership approval to visit.
• Avoid "off-limits" establishments as determined by the base commander.

Prohibited Locations / Activities

• Other squadrons and their patios — unless you have prior approval from squadron leadership.
• Arnold Hall Community Center — except for the ITT office.
• The Refuge (Technical Training Spiritual Center).
• Family housing and the Inns of Lackland (Gateway Inn) — unless invited by a family member attending graduation and approved by squadron leadership.
• Swimming pools are not authorized.

Money and Money List

Take only the money you think you'll need and a current money list with you on Town Pass. (See MTIs BMT Orientation Briefing for the money list format.)

• Be aware of unscrupulous merchants who may try to sell you poor-quality or stolen goods.
• Due to luggage limitations when you ship to Technical Training, wait until Tech Training to make any large purchases.

Visitor Information Center

The Visitor Information Center is across the street from the Alamo. It's a good place to find brochures, maps, and tourist information about San Antonio.

Shipping Luggage

You're authorized to take three pieces of luggage to Technical Training:

• Your Air Force duffle bag
• The bag / suitcase you brought to BMT
• (plus any third piece your unit authorizes)

Do not have family members bring luggage, clothing, electronics, or anything else from home. If you have more than the authorized amount, it can delay or even prevent your departure.

Town Pass is your time to enjoy San Antonio with family and friends. The rules in this section are your foundation for being out in the public eye — project a professional image at all times, because you're now representing the U.S. Air Force.
