Whether you serve four years or twenty, you will eventually hand back the uniform, and the federal government spends real money making sure you land on your feet. The DoD, Department of Labor, Department of Veterans Affairs, and several other agencies run no-cost programs that translate military experience into a civilian career. You're reading this before you've enlisted, so don't memorize any of it. Just know the machinery exists, because "what happens to me afterward?" belongs in the enlistment decision.

The exit ramp is mandatory

The Transition Assistance Program (TAP) is an interagency effort: DoD leads it through the Military-Civilian Transition Office, with the VA, Department of Labor, Department of Education, Small Business Administration, and Office of Personnel Management each owning a piece (1).

Nobody skips it. Every service member with 180 continuous days or more on active duty must complete TAP, including Guard and Reserve members who hit that threshold on Title 10 (federal) orders. Title 32 (state) time doesn't count, and because the standard curriculum was built for people leaving service permanently, the FY2025 NDAA created a dedicated TAP pathway tailored to reserve component members (2).

Federal law (10 U.S.C. Section 1142) requires you to start no later than 365 days before your separation or retirement date; an unanticipated separation with less than a year left means TAP starts immediately (1). Air Force guidance says begin even earlier: up to 24 months out for retirees, 18 for separating members. What the program actually contains:

  • Individualized counseling, one-on-one, producing your personal Individual Transition Plan (1)
  • Pre-separation counseling on benefits, entitlements, and time-sensitive decisions
  • A consecutive three-day core: a DoD day on civilian workplace culture, skills crosswalks, and post-military finances (3); a VA day on disability compensation and benefits; and a DOL day on job-search fundamentals (4)
  • Optional two-day tracks (employment, vocational credentials, higher education, and the SBA's "Boots to Business" entrepreneurship course), which become required for members assessed as less transition-ready (3)
  • Capstone, where your commander personally verifies you meet Career Readiness Standards, no later than 90 days before separation (1)

DoDI 1332.35 sets the DoD-wide policy; AFI 36-3037 is the Air Force supplement. The full countdown calendar lives in Planning Your Transition.

SkillBridge: audition for a civilian job on military pay

SkillBridge is the single program in this section most worth remembering. During your final 180 days of service you can work at a civilian company full time (internship, apprenticeship, or industry training) while the Air Force keeps paying your full salary and benefits (19). As of mid-2024, about 4,900 authorized organizations offered more than 8,400 active opportunities, from corporate fellowships at Amazon, Microsoft, and Salesforce to skilled trades, healthcare, and government programs (19).

Here's the mistake to avoid: only about 10 to 11% of eligible members actually use SkillBridge, mostly because they never heard of it (20). You now know about it years in advance.

Participation length is capped by rank. Effective March 31, 2026, the Department of the Air Force replaced the flat 180-day allowance with tiers: up to 120 days for E-1 through E-5 (and O-1 to O-3), 90 days for E-6 and E-7, and 60 days for E-8, E-9, and O-5, with colonels needing an exception to policy and Space Force categories differing slightly (25). Command approval is required in every case, and a job offer at the end is not guaranteed, though conversion rates to full-time positions are high. The full rank table and eligibility rules are in Employment After Service.

One flagship example: the Hiring Our Heroes Corporate Fellowship, a 12-week SkillBridge program pairing weekday work at a host company with professional development "huddles," has graduated over 10,000 fellows with an 85% job offer rate and average starting salaries around $110,000 (11).

What your service is worth on a resume

Civilian employers don't speak AFSC or rank, but they absolutely value the skills underneath. The Department of Labor's free O*NET Military Crosswalk maps any Air Force job to matched civilian occupations, complete with wage data (12); Employment After Service tours the full translation toolkit. A sample of how it converts:

Air Force jobCivilian equivalent
3D0X2 Cyber Systems OperationsIT Systems Administrator, Network Administrator
1N0X1 Operations IntelligenceIntelligence Analyst, Risk Analyst
4A0X1 Health Services ManagementHealthcare Administrator
3E0X1 Electrical SystemsElectrician, Electrical Engineer
2T1X1 Vehicle OperationsLogistics Coordinator, Fleet Manager

Rank converts by function, not title. "Staff Sergeant (E-5)" means nothing to a hiring manager; "team supervisor responsible for 12 technicians and $3.5M in equipment" means everything. As rough anchors: E-5 reads as a line supervisor, E-7 as an operations manager, E-9 as a director.

The habit that powers all of this starts on day one of service, not at separation: keep receipts. TAP teaches the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for resumes and interviews, but the raw material is quantified accomplishments you record along the way, in your EPRs and your own notes. "Managed supply operations" is invisible. "Supervised supply operations for a 250-person organization with $2.3M in equipment accountability, reducing inventory discrepancies by 18%" gets interviews. Numbers, budgets, team sizes, percentages. And practice explaining your job to someone with zero military knowledge.

Three more assets ride out the door with you:

A security clearance, with a shelf life. If your career field comes with a clearance, it remains active for 24 months after separation and a new employer can reactivate it. Cleared professionals averaged $119,131 in 2025, and roughly 70,000 more cleared positions exist than people available to fill them (13).

Credentials banked while serving. AF COOL pays up to $4,500 (lifetime) toward more than 800 industry credentials, including PMP, CompTIA, CISSP, Cisco, ASE, and FAA certifications (14). A 2024 policy change opened leadership credentials, previously restricted to E-7 and above, to all eligible enlisted ranks (15).

A real degree. The CCAF associate degree is regionally accredited by SACSCOC, the same accreditation major civilian universities hold, and the AU-ABC network of 70+ colleges and 250+ programs accepts all 60 CCAF credits toward a bachelor's degree with a binding degree-completion contract (16).

Federal hiring tilts your way too. Under 5 U.S.C. Section 2108, veterans get 5-point preference for 180+ days of qualifying service during specified periods, 10-point preference with a service-connected disability, plus special authorities that let agencies hire veterans without competitive announcements (21). The mechanics are covered in Employment After Service.

Free help, and a lot of it

In the civilian market, professional connections fill more jobs than applications do, and the veteran-support ecosystem hands you help that civilians pay real money for. It unlocks during transition or after service; the table is here so you know the safety net exists.

Two groups get extra machinery. Guard and Reserve members keep a dual network, civilian and military at once, and USERRA legally protects their civilian job through activations (strengthened in 2025 by the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Act), with ESGR providing free mediation when employers push back (22). Veteran status for hiring preferences takes 180+ days on Title 10 orders outside training, 30+ consecutive days in a war zone, or 20+ years of reserve service. Spouses have a parallel system: the Military Spouse Employment Partnership connects them with 950+ committed employers and has produced 360,000+ hires (23), alongside MyCAA tuition funding, SECO career coaching, the same free LinkedIn Premium year (17), and the Military Spouse Career Accelerator Program, a 12-week paid fellowship with 500+ participating employers that became permanent on January 1, 2026 after a 2023 pilot, with an 86% employment offer rate (24).
