A Note on the Space Force

When the U.S. Space Force was established, several former Air Force bases were redesignated as Space Force Bases, including Peterson, Schriever, and Buckley in Colorado, Vandenberg in California, and Patrick in Florida. Thule Air Base in Greenland was renamed Pituffik Space Base in 2023. You will still cross paths with these installations throughout your career.

Installation Types

• Air Force Base (AFB): a major installation supporting flying, training, logistics, or command missions.
• Joint Base: one installation shared by two or more services under a single command structure.
• Air Force Station (AFS): a smaller, specialized site, often for radar, missile, or communications missions.
