Remember, it is important to listen to a suicidal person; DO NOT dismiss what they are saying and ENSURE you take them seriously. Use the following ten steps to help someone that may be suicidal.
- Get educated in the warning signs and symptoms of suicide.
- Get involved and be available; show interest and support.
- Be direct and talk openly and freely about suicide; ask them if they are thinking about suicide.
- Be willing to listen without judgment and allow for true expression of feelings.
- Do not debate whether suicide is right or wrong or if their feelings are good or bad.
- Do not lecture the person on the value of life and do not dare them to commit suicide.
- Do not ask them why they want to commit suicide because that encourages defensiveness.
- Offer empathy, not sympathy and do not act shocked.
- Do not swear to secrecy.
- Offer hope that alternatives are available and take action!
When talking with someone showing risk factors for suicide think of the acronym “ACE”.
