Two numbers do all the work here, and they answer different questions. The scores you walk out of the testing room with follow you into your job counselor meeting, your contract signing, and your whole career. Knowing how the test is built and how the Air Force reads your results lets you show up with a plan instead of a guess.
It measures what you've learned, not how smart you are
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is a multiple-aptitude test taken by more than a million people a year: military applicants, high school students, and college students. The Department of Defense built it in 1968, and the Air Force adopted it in 1973 (1). Its purpose is dual from the start: confirm you meet the minimum aptitude to enlist, and match your abilities to specific career fields.
The key word is "developed." The ASVAB tests skills and knowledge you picked up through school and life, not a fixed IQ. That is good news, because it means genuine preparation genuinely raises your score. You are being tested on what you have learned and how well you apply it, not on some trait you can't change.

The computerized CAT-ASVAB (Computer Adaptive Test-ASVAB) has run at every Military Entrance Processing Station since its 1996 to 1997 rollout, making it the first large-scale adaptive test battery used anywhere in a high-stakes setting (1). Its lineage runs back to the Army Alpha and Army Beta tests that screened WWI recruits; by the 1950s the Armed Forces Qualification Test had emerged as the screening device, and by 1976 all branches were using the standardized ASVAB for both selection and classification.
Ten subtests, four domains
The ASVAB is ten subtests across four domains. Knowing what each one measures tells you where to spend your study time once you have a target career field.

Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension combine into a Verbal Expression (VE) score that feeds several of the composite formulas below and carries heavy weight throughout the scoring. Assembling Objects, the lone spatial subtest, ties directly to maintenance and technical work. All told, the CAT-ASVAB has 135 scored questions and runs about 197 minutes; most people finish in roughly two hours (2).
You may also see tryout questions in two to four subtests. They don't count toward your score, extra time is added when they appear, and you can't tell which questions are live and which aren't. Answer everything as if it counts.
The computer adapts, and you can't take anything back
The CAT-ASVAB tunes itself to your ability in real time. Your first question is medium difficulty. Answer it correctly and the next is harder; miss it and the next is easier. That continues until the algorithm pins down your level, so your final score reflects the difficulty where your performance stabilized, not simply how many questions you got right (2). Because you only ever see questions matched to your ability, testing time is used efficiently.
One rule to internalize now: you cannot go back or change an answer on the CAT-ASVAB. Once you submit a response, it's final. Take a beat before you click.
The paper version plays by different rules
A handful of Mobile Examination Test (MET) sites still give the paper-and-pencil (P&P) ASVAB: 225 questions in 149 minutes. Four differences matter. Auto and Shop Information collapse into a single subtest (AS) instead of two. Everyone starts and stops together rather than working at their own pace. You can review and change answers within a subtest. And results take several days instead of arriving on the spot. Scores from both formats are made equivalent through a statistical process called "equating," so a Word Knowledge standard score of 55 means the same thing no matter which version you took (2).
Two scores that answer two different questions
Your ASVAB produces two kinds of scores with completely different jobs. Confusing them, or chasing one while ignoring the other, is the most common mistake people make.
AFQT: the gate you have to clear
The Armed Forces Qualification Test is not a separate exam. It's a score pulled from four subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension, the ones that measure general verbal and math ability. The math runs in two steps: WK and PC first combine into VE, then the formula applies, AFQT = 2VE + AR + MK (3). That raw number converts to a percentile from 1 to 99 by comparing you to a nationally representative reference group, the 1997 Profile of American Youth study, which sampled about 6,000 people aged 18 to 23 (4).
So an AFQT of 72 means you scored as well as or better than 72% of that reference group. The military sorts AFQT percentiles into categories:

Congress bans Category V enlistments outright and caps Category IV at 20% of total accessions (5).
MAGE line scores: which doors open
Where the AFQT answers "Can you join?", your line scores (also called composite scores) answer "Which jobs can you do?" They bundle ASVAB subtests through formulas built to predict success in specific occupational areas, and higher line scores mean more career options. The Air Force uses four, known together as MAGE:

Unlike other branches, which simply add standard scores, the Air Force reports MAGE as percentiles from 0 to 99, so they sit on the same scale as your AFQT (5). The Administrative composite once folded in Numerical Operations and Coding Speed, but those subtests were dropped from the ASVAB in 2002 and 2003. General is the composite to watch: it gates many of the most competitive fields, which is why strengthening arithmetic reasoning and verbal skills pays off so widely.
Requirements vary enormously by field. These are representative examples, not a full list:

Look at the spread: Security Forces needs a General of just 33, while Scientific Applications Specialist demands an 88 Mechanical and an 85 Electronics, among the highest in the Air Force. Which fields you can pursue depends entirely on where your composites land, and each one maps to a cluster of Air Force Specialty Codes. That is why preparing for specific subtests, not just the AFQT, matters so much.
The Air Force sets the highest bar
The Air Force holds the highest ASVAB requirements of any branch, and your education level sets your minimum AFQT (5).
High school diploma holders (Tier 1) need a minimum AFQT of 31. That's the policy floor; operationally the Air Force often works closer to 36, and over 90% of accepted recruits score 50 or above. Tier 1 credentials make up the vast majority of all Non-Prior Service enlistments.
GED holders without college credits (Tier 2) face a much higher bar: a minimum AFQT of 50. That 19-point gap reflects historical data showing higher attrition among GED holders. A GED holder with at least 15 college credits may qualify under modified standards. Tier 2 applicants are a small slice of annual enlistments.
These minimums apply equally across Active Duty, Air Force Reserve, and Air National Guard; the components do not keep separate AFQT standards for eligibility.
Clearing the AFQT only gets you in the door. Each career field also demands specific MAGE composites, so someone with an AFQT of 60 but a General of only 30 cannot touch cyber warfare operations no matter how eligible they are overall. That is why building your job list means reading both your AFQT and your MAGE composites together.
Where and how you'll test
Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS)
The 65 MEPS locations across the United States and Puerto Rico are the joint-service facilities where you complete enlistment. They fall under the U.S. Military Entrance Processing Command (USMEPCOM), headquartered in North Chicago, Illinois. Here you take the CAT-ASVAB on a computer and get your scores immediately, then move through a physical examination, background screening, career counseling, and the Oath of Enlistment, typically over one to two days. Bring valid identification (Social Security card, birth certificate, driver's license), any medical documentation, and your glasses or contacts. Leave valuables, weapons, and hats at home. Mobile Examination Test (MET) sites
MET sites are satellite testing locations for applicants who live far from a MEPS, set up in federal buildings, National Guard armories, or Reserve centers. Most now give the CAT-ASVAB, though a few still offer the paper format described above. They handle testing only: you still travel to MEPS for the physical and final processing. If you take the P&P version, your answer sheets are mailed to MEPS for scoring, with results usually back in a few days.
PiCAT: testing from home
The Pending Internet Computerized Adaptive Test (PiCAT) lets eligible applicants take the ASVAB from home with no time limits on individual subtests (6). You must finish within 48 hours of starting, and your access code expires 30 days after your recruiter issues it. Within 45 days of completing the PiCAT you take a 25 to 30 minute Verification Test (VTest) at MEPS to confirm your results. Only first-time test-takers who have never taken any version of the ASVAB are eligible.
Don't treat the PiCAT as a shortcut. The content is identical, the MEPS verification is mandatory, and about 5% of test-takers are randomly selected to retake the full ASVAB regardless of how verification goes (6). No calculators, no internet lookups, no outside help. Same rules as the proctored test; only the setting is friendlier.
ASVAB Career Exploration Program for students
High school and college students can take the ASVAB through the Career Exploration Program (CEP) at their schools, free and with no military obligation. The CEP includes the OCCU-Find database of hundreds of civilian and military careers and the Find Your Interests (FYI) assessment built on the RIASEC career-choice model (7). One critical distinction: 10th-grade CEP scores are NOT valid for enlistment (though they still unlock the career tools), while 11th- and 12th-grade CEP scores ARE valid for two years from the test date. Students can pull their AFQT score at asvabprogram.com with their personal access code; contact your school counselor to arrange testing.
Retesting: why patience pays
Your scores stay valid for two years from your most recent test date, and the Air Force allows retesting under set conditions (8). Wait 30 days after your first test for your first retest, another 30 days for your second, and six calendar months between every attempt after that. There's no cap on total retests, but one hard restriction governs everything: the Air Force does not permit retesting once you enlist in the Delayed Entry Program. Sign your contract and commit to a job, and your scores lock.
That makes patience strategic, because the military uses your most recent scores, not your highest. Score 55, then 48 on a retest, and you're evaluated on the 48. Only retest when you've genuinely prepared and expect to do better. And if you jump 20 or more AFQT points within six months, MEPS may require a Confirmation Test (C-Test) to verify the gain is legitimate; the C-Test has no waiting period, but skipping it triggers a six-month wait before you can retest again (8).
How to prepare with a plan
The official ASVAB website offers sample questions and score explanations straight from the DoD, and airforce.com/asvab covers how MAGE scores translate to career fields (5). Work in two phases. First, drill the four AFQT subtests (Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge), since they set your eligibility and feed multiple composites. Then pick your target career fields, find the MAGE composites they require, and strengthen the subtests feeding those. Chasing electronics work? Add Electronics Information and General Science. Aiming at cyber or intelligence? Push Arithmetic Reasoning and verbal skills to drive up your General.
