After Basic Military Training you move straight into technical training, "tech school," where the test shifts from discipline and fitness to one question: can you learn the job? The standards are real. Thousands of Airmen clear them every year, and the support to join them is built into the schedule if you use it.
Courses are built in blocks you can't skip
Air Force tech school uses a building-block approach. Instead of dumping the full complexity of your job on you at once, each course is divided into blocks, discrete units that build on each other in sequence. Each block opens with classroom instruction on theory and fundamentals, then moves into practical exercises. At the end you face evaluations: written tests, plus hands-on performance checks in career fields where you have to prove you can execute the task, not just describe it (1).
Course length varies enormously. A Personnel specialist (3F0X1) might finish in roughly 26 days at Keesler AFB. A Cryptologic Language Analyst could spend up to 64 weeks at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, for a Category IV language like Arabic, Chinese, or Korean, then more follow-on training at Goodfellow AFB. Aircraft maintenance at Sheppard AFB lands between, from several weeks to several months depending on the airframe. The Air Education and Training Command publishes official lengths through the Education and Training Course Announcements (ETCA) system, and your recruiter can pull the duration for any Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) you're weighing.
The AirForce.com technical training page puts the overall range at 4 to 52 weeks. Roughly:
- Short (4 to 8 weeks): many administrative and support fields, including Personnel (3F0X1), Services (3M0X1), and some medical support roles.
- Medium (8 to 26 weeks): most maintenance, security forces, communications, and intelligence fields.
- Long (26 to 52+ weeks): language analyst, certain cyber operations, and advanced avionics and electronics specialties.
Ask before you build your job list. Course length is part of the commitment.
You graduate an apprentice, not a finished product
Graduating tech school earns your 3-skill level and the title "Apprentice." It is a starting line. Your Career Field Education and Training Plan (CFETP) maps everything after it.
Here is the distinction that trips people up. Tech school develops you to what the Air Force calls 2b proficiency: you can perform most of a task but still need help with the hardest parts (2). That is the expected graduation standard, not a failure. Only later, through on-the-job training (OJT) at your first duty station, do you reach 3c proficiency ("Go" level), where you perform the task independently to standard for accuracy and timeliness. Your training genuinely doesn't end at tech school.
At your first base you enter upgrade training toward the 5-skill level ("Journeyman"): finish your Career Development Courses, prove out every 5-level core task in your CFETP, and log a minimum of 12 to 15 months of upgrade time depending on specialty (2). A supervisor certifies your competence; your commander approves the upgrade. Beyond that, the 7-skill level ("Craftsman") adds more core tasks, a craftsman course where required, and the rank of Staff Sergeant. The 9-skill level ("Superintendent") is reserved for Senior Master Sergeants who have finished the Senior NCO Academy.
Career Development Courses come after graduation
Your academic work isn't done when you leave tech school. Career Development Courses (CDCs) are knowledge-based study sets specific to your AFSC that you complete after reaching your first duty station, and they are mandatory to upgrade from the 3-skill to the 5-skill level.
The Air Force Career Development Academy (AFCDA) at Keesler AFB runs them. CDCs were historically paper or PDF textbooks of 100 to 600 pages. Since 2021 the AFCDA has been rebuilding them on the myLearning platform, swapping static reading for interactive content, 3D models, realistic scenarios, and performance-based assessments (3). The first modernized CDC (2R151, Maintenance Management Production Journeyman) launched August 1, 2022, with more career fields following (4). Each CDC ends in an End of Course (EOC) exam; fail it twice and you re-enroll with a mandatory study period before retesting (5).
Two failed tests can put you in front of a board
Tech school pairs written exams with hands-on checks. Progress Checks happen inside a block to see whether you're keeping pace. Treat them as an early-warning system: struggle on one and your instructors and Military Training Leaders (MTLs) know to get you help before a graded test. Block Tests are the comprehensive exams covering a full instructional unit, and they carry weight. Fail the same block test twice, or fail three academic tests across the course, and you trigger a formal Commander's Review that can lead to additional training, recycling, reclassification to a different career field, or in serious cases separation (1). The End of Course exam is the final written assessment; the minimum passing score is typically 70% (6), though specific courses set higher bars, so confirm yours early.

The Air Force doesn't cut students loose at the first failure. A single failed test usually brings remedial study time, extra instruction, and a retest, and leadership may place you in the Commander's Awareness Program (CAP) for closer supervision and targeted help. If failures keep coming (the same test twice, or three total), you enter Commander's Review: a Faculty Board weighs your case on AETC Form 125, judging your potential, effort, and circumstances under the "whole person concept" (1). The three outcomes are recycling (repeat the course or part of it with a later class), reclassification (a different AFSC), or separation, and the command decides which, not you. Grades cut the other way too. Students who post exceptional marks with no test failures can earn Distinguished Graduate or Top Graduate honors, documented on AETC Form 499 and written into your permanent record (1). That performance can factor into assignment decisions for certain career fields and pipelines, and it tells future supervisors you can handle weight.
Hands-on work is pass or fail
Academics matter, but tech school exists to prove you can do the job, not just pass a test about it. Hands-on skills are scored against Task Performance Checklists (TPCs) on AF Form 689 or a computer-generated equivalent (7): step-by-step criteria an instructor watches you meet. The standard is binary. Unlike a written test where 70% passes, practical evaluations are Go/No-Go. "Go" means you complete every part of the task independently, accurately, on time, by the correct procedure. "No-Go" means more practice. Tasks get trained and retrained until you hit "Go." No partial credit.
More of that practice now happens in simulation. Maintenance students train on representative aircraft and trainer systems, helicopter courses use interactive 3D engine models to diagnose malfunctions, and Virtual Reality has spread fast across AETC, with some courses issuing desktop VR simulators for 24/7 practice in the dorms. Travis AFB runs VR modules for C-17 and KC-46A maintenance, covering flight line hazards, structures, and control systems (8); the 193rd Special Operations Wing in Pennsylvania uses VR for MC-130J Commando II maintenance, and Moody AFB weapons instructors use it for refresher training (9). The Pilot Training Next program proved the model, turning out certified pilots in about four months instead of a year, with each VR rig costing roughly $15,000 against $4.5 million for a legacy simulator (10). Virtual welding trainers cut material waste before students touch real components, and the Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) Virtual Training Facility at Nellis AFB has logged over 15,000 training hours on dome simulators (11).
How to actually pass
Tech school packs a lot into a short window, and students who plan beat students who wing it.
Start studying on day one, not the night before a test. A typical day is eight hours of classroom instruction plus physical training three days a week, which leaves evenings and weekends for review. Use them. Modernized courses hand out tablet access to the slides your instructors present and videos you can rewatch until a concept clicks, so lean on those instead of relying on live instruction alone. Collaborative learning is encouraged now, down to classrooms with moveable desks built for group work; explaining a concept to a peer is one of the fastest ways to find the holes in your own understanding.
Don't wait until you're failing to ask for help. Instructors are there as facilitators and subject-matter experts, and questions during or after class are expected, not weakness. Early intervention leaves you far more options than a Commander's Review does.
You will also carry military duties around your coursework: dormitory cleaning, Charge of Quarters (CQ) rotations, and other tasks. Learn your duty roster ahead of time and plan study around it. The phase system sets your privileges, but in every phase your primary job is learning, and tech school is a far more predictable environment for that than an operational unit. Phones and personal laptops or tablets are allowed off-duty, and Wi-Fi reaches most areas: AETC put $18.5 million into high-bandwidth wireless across all 15 main training locations, part of a broader $50+ million connectivity push, with every site slated online by the end of FY2024 (12).
The help is there if you raise your hand
Nobody will force you to study. But the moment you ask, the support is substantial.
Military Training Leaders (MTLs) are non-commissioned officers (AFSC 8B100) assigned to move non-prior-service Airmen into military life during tech school. Where instructors own the course content, MTLs mentor the broader jump from BMT to tech school: they provide academic counseling, track your progress, step in when you struggle, and refer you to chaplains, mental health, or other helping agencies when personal issues bleed into performance. Across AETC, MTLs support roughly 30,000 Airmen at 49 training locations (13).
Every major training base runs an education center through its Force Support Squadron. Keesler AFB's Education Center (Sablich Center, Building 0701) offers guidance, CLEP/DSST testing, and university partnerships including Embry-Riddle and Bellevue, and the Keesler Digital Library provides databases, study guides, and free unlimited 24/7 tutoring through Tutor.com for every Active Duty, Reserve, and National Guard member. Sheppard AFB's Education Center offers the same kind of support, with on-base Wayland Baptist and Embry-Riddle programs. Base libraries add study pods, computer labs, and the Department of Defense MWR Libraries system: free 24/7 tutoring in 40+ subjects, CLEP/DSST and certification prep through Learning Express Library, 500+ courses via Universal Class, and O'Reilly Online Learning for technical books (a real edge for cyber and IT fields).
Two platforms tie it together. myLearning (formerly ADLS) is the Air Force's primary digital learning system for computer-based training and course materials; it launched in March 2021 (14). And the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) enrolls you automatically when you finish BMT, so your tech school courses count toward an Associate of Applied Sciences degree. CCAF is accredited by the SACSCOC through Air University, the same regional accreditation civilian community colleges hold, so the credits carry real weight (15). Guard and Reserve: same school, different clock
Join the Air National Guard or Air Force Reserve and you attend the same BMT and the same technical training as Active Duty. Content and standards are identical.
The split comes after graduation. Active Duty members report to a first permanent duty station for continuous service; Guard and Reserve members return to their home units and finish upgrade training (OJT, CDCs, core task certifications) across drill weekends and annual training. That stretched-out timeline is generally more flexible than the Active Duty version, but the proficiency standards you have to meet are exactly the same.
Training records flow through component-specific channels, with Functional Managers (ANG MFM, AFRC MFM) coordinating requirements against Active Duty Career Field Managers.
