No structured, end-to-end educational course for Air Force enlistment currently exists in any format. Scattered resources cover individual pieces. Official sites handle marketing, YouTube creators cover BMT preparation, Reddit provides unstructured Q&A. But nothing bridges the entire journey from "Should I join?" through your first assignment and career progression. Air Force 101 fills that gap with a comprehensive, organized learning path built on verified official sources and current policy.

Air Force recruits arriving at Basic Military Training

Why this course exists

The current recruiting environment (record Delayed Entry Program numbers, expanded eligibility, significant financial incentives) means more people than ever are seeking enlistment information. Yet the information ecosystem remains fragmented:

  • Official recruiting sites like airforce.com are marketing funnels, built to attract and convert. They sketch the pipeline but leave gaps in job selection strategy, waivers, security clearances, and post-BMT navigation.
  • YouTube creators like Airman Vision (Kyle Gott, about 190,000 subscribers) and JodywithaWhy (MSgt Jody Reed, about 112,000 subscribers) offer authentic perspectives across hundreds of videos, with no sequential structure, and they age as policies change.
  • Online communities like r/AirForceRecruits provide real-time answers from actual recruiters and recent graduates, buried across thousands of threads with conflicting advice.

This course synthesizes current policy, practical preparation, and strategic guidance into one structured learning experience: the bridge between marketing that sells the Air Force and practical wisdom that prepares you to join it.

How to use it

AF101 is 23 modules covering the complete enlisted journey for all three components (Active Duty, Air Force Reserve, and Air National Guard). You don't need to finish it before talking to a recruiter, but it works best in sequence:

  • Modules 1-2: read before contacting a recruiter. Decide whether service fits your goals and which component fits your situation.
  • Modules 3-7: read during recruiting and DEP. Testing, MEPS, job selection, contracts, and DEP preparation.
  • Modules 8-10: read before shipping. BMT, Technical Training, and your first assignment.
  • Modules 11-23: reference as needed. Assignments, deployments, pay, benefits, career advancement, family, and transition.

Each section opens with a Bottom Line Up Front card carrying the facts that matter most, keeps the body focused under clear headings, links to official resources for anything binding, and closes with a short knowledge check so you know what stuck. Sources sit in a collapsible reference at the end of each section.

What it covers, and what it doesn't

Seven areas, end to end: decision and preparation (history, values, components, recruiting, testing, MEPS, jobs, contracts, DEP), training (BMT and tech school), military life (assignments, PCS, deployments, daily base life), compensation and benefits (pay, TRICARE, GI Bill, retirement), career development (promotions, PME, retraining), family considerations, and separation and transition.

Deliberately out of scope:

  • Officer commissioning pathways. This is an enlisted course; OTS, ROTC, and the Academy have distinct processes. Commissioning Programs covers the enlisted-to-officer routes.
  • Space Force-specific content. Distinct career fields and culture that deserve separate treatment.
  • AFSC-by-AFSC technical detail. With 200+ specialty codes, the course teaches you how career fields work and how to research them; the platform's Career Explorer handles the individual jobs.
  • Specific dollar amounts. Pay and bonus figures change annually, so the course links to official DFAS calculators instead of quoting numbers that go stale.

Important disclaimer

This course is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the United States Air Force, Department of the Air Force, Department of Defense, or any government agency. Information is provided for educational purposes only.

  • This is not official Air Force guidance. Policies change frequently, and content here may lag an update. Always verify through official sources and your recruiter.
  • This course does not replace your recruiter, who is the only person authorized to determine your individual eligibility, available career fields, and enlistment options.
  • This is not legal, medical, or financial advice. Consult qualified professionals for those.
  • Only written contract terms are enforceable. Nothing in this course, or from any unofficial source, overrides what's documented in your enlistment contract and governing regulations.

Official Air Force imagery used throughout is sourced from public domain Department of Defense resources (DVIDS, af.mil) and does not imply endorsement. Treat every unofficial source, including this course, as a starting point for research: this course cites its sources, and when in doubt, your recruiter and official publications win.
