Before you start
Half-length practice test
Nine subtests at half length: 71 questions in 101 minutes. A realistic run that fits in an evening.
- Questions
- 71
- Testing time
- 101 min
- Subtests
- 9
This is not a real ASVAB length. Every subtest is cut to roughly half its questions and half its time, which keeps the pace honest but makes the total shorter than anything you will sit at a MEPS. Use it to rehearse pacing and stamina; use the full test to find out whether you can hold that pace for the real 197 minutes.
What the test contains
In the order the test administers them. Each subtest is timed separately and the clock does not carry over.
| Subtest | Questions | Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| General Science GS | 8 | 6 |
| Arithmetic Reasoning AR | 8 | 28 |
| Word Knowledge WK | 8 | 5 |
| Paragraph Comprehension PC | 5 | 14 |
| Mathematics Knowledge MK | 8 | 16 |
| Electronics Information EI | 8 | 5 |
| Auto & Shop Information AS | 10 | 7 |
| Mechanical Comprehension MC | 8 | 11 |
| Assembling Objects AO | 8 | 9 |
| Total | 71 | 101 |
Rules
- No calculator. You do not get one at a MEPS, so using one here only teaches you a method you cannot use. Paper and a pencil are allowed and expected.
- No going back. Once you answer a question you cannot change it or return to it. The real CAT works this way because it selects your next question from how you answered the last one.
- One sitting. Each subtest has its own clock and finishing early does not buy you time on the next one. Sit the whole thing in one go or the result tells you nothing about your stamina.
- Answer every question. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so a blank is strictly worse than a guess.
Start the practice test
Each subtest is timed separately and submits itself when its clock runs out. A test cannot be paused and picked up later, so set aside 1 hour 41 minutes before you start.
