FW 003: US Air Force veteran David Conrad talks to us about the 3E1X1 Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) AFSC

On this episode, I’m interviewing Air Force veteran David Conrad on the 3E1X1 – Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning AFSC!
David brings a wealth of knowledge having been deployed as an HVAC specialist, but also as a HVAC Tech School instructor for the AFSC.

Some of the biggest things that I took away from this very informative interview was:
1. If you are looking for a career field in the Air Force that teaches you a skill you can use on the outside as a civilian, this might be a good choice for you. Even if you don’t get a job in HVAC you better believe your training will come in handy as a future homeowner!
2. There is MUCH more training involved than I expected. Expect even more training when you leave tech school, because their CDCs are massive!
3. You don’t need to be a mechanical genius to do well in the AFSC. Like most of the jobs in the Air Force, they’ll teach you what you need to know…even what a screwdriver is.
Here’s a little overview of the AFSC:
Duties. Installs, operates, maintains, and repairs heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems, combustion equipment, and industrial air compressors. Maintains and repairs non-electric kitchen equipment. Manages HVAC and R functions and activities.
1. You’ll need at least 47 Mechanical OR a 28 Electrical Score on the ASVAB
2. As of a few months ago there are 1359 people in the AFSC, 1349 males (99.26%) and 10 females (.74%)!
3. Tech School is 98 classroom days at Sheppard AFB, which is located at Wichita Falls, TX.
4. Lastly, you’ll earn credits toward a CCAF degree in Mechanical & Electrical Technology
