If you are joining the Air Force, then your career will start with basic military training (BMT). This is one of the most challenging experiences that you will go through in your life, both mentally and physically, but you will come out stronger on the other side. 

New recruits will have to go through basic training, which will equip them with the skills that they need to survive, and be successful in all operations that may arise in the Air Force.

This training will include military discipline, physical fitness training, drills, war skills, along with all of the education around Air Force values, and life in the force. 

As expected, basic training is a gruelling and difficult task, and there are many rules and regulations surrounding the experience.

If you are thinking of joining the US Air Force, then you will need to be aware of such rules, and you may have questions regarding basic training, and what is expected of you. 

One of the most popular questions is are mobile phones allowed during basic training. We are here to answer this for you. n

Are mobile phones allowed in basic training?

We are sorry to break it to you, but no mobile phones are allowed during basic training. This is a rule that goes across the board, no matter where you have your basic training, or whether it is for the military, or Air Force.

That being said, there will be periods where using a phone is allowed to call friends and family, but these would not be during the actual training itself, but more during down times.

When can you use your phone in Air Force basic training?

For years, phones have been banned at basic training, but as cell phones become a normal aspect of daily life, attitudes have changed slightly.

Recruits are now allowed to take cell phones to basic training, but they are not allowed to use them whenever they want to.

For instance, in many basic training locations, recruits may only be permitted to have voice calls, and no texts, videos, images or internet exchanges, and they will not be allowed to carry a phone around with them, as they would normally in everyday life. 

In addition, cell phones may be inspected, so recruits may need to delete any personal information on the cell phone before going to basic training.

In basic training, cell phones may be confiscated and kept by the drill sergeant, and only returned to recruits upon certain days or periods, to allow them to use their phones to call home. 

A trainee during basic training is only permitted to use a phone when supervised, and told it is okay to do so.

If a trainee does not have a cell phone, then they will be able to contact friends and family during their basic training at certain periods of time. They will be allowed to use a payphone at the training site, with a calling card. 

As per the Basic Military Training policy, trainees are authorized access to their phones at the fourth week, and at the end of the seventh week of training to confirm travel arrangements with family or other guests and may also be permitted use of their phones throughout the training depending on their performance.  

Do you get your phone in Air Force tech school?

The good news is that yes, the Air Force will allow you to bring your phone with your to tech school.

That being said, you are only permitted to use your phone during off duty hours, and not throughout your training, and in periods where you are in your dormitory. 

The same rules apply for other electronic devices too. These are permitted, but only in off duty hours.

Can you walk, talk, and text in uniform?

There are some gray areas as to whether you can walk, talk and text in uniform. For the most part, you cannot do so.

However, you may wear an earpiece or a headset if necessary during official duties only. This is also permitted during travel, or if you are partaking in physical fitness activities, too. 

With that in mind, you actually cannot walk, talk and text in uniform as you are not allowed to use a cell phone whilst walking in your uniform, except for in extreme situations, emergencies, or unless you are to receive official notifications and information.
